Organizations

This list covers the most important worldwide organizations that support, promote, or discuss technology-driven art. Some are very specific, such as focusing only on computer graphics, while others host intellectual discussion regarding the intersection of art and technology. We've found that many of these organizations are an excellent hub for news, art, and events.

We Make Money Not Art
Great blogger site covering the intersection between art, design and technology. Always has interesting art and comments. This is one of our most favorite sites.
Art Science Research Lab
Intellectual site co-created by Stephen Jay Gould, focusing on the lifework of the French-American artist, Marcel Duchamp
Dorkbot
A great worldwide organization showcasing emerging art with meetings and events. They have Dorkbot groups in various cities, such as San Francisco, http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotsf/, and host events showcasing: People doing strange things with electricity.
Accelerating Studies Foundation
Here, they have an excellent and massive list of links of technology-related organizations.
ASCI: Art and Science Collaboration Inc.
Great organization since 1988. They are a network of artists who either use or are inspired by science and technology. ASCI also produces exhibitions of kinetic art, interactive light art, solar art, digital prints, and a Womentek exhibition. They've produced four ArtSci international symposia on collaboration, and the ArtSci INDEX, an online matching tool for potential collaborators. The send out a comprehensive monthly ASCI eBulletin (for ASCI members).
Eyebeam
Great site. Eyebeam is an art and technology center providing tools for digital research and experimentation.
Rhizome
Excellent site and a great organization. One of our top-five choices. They showcase emerging art, events, and background info on artists.
SIGGRAPH
SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics) is the premier organization of computer graphics, 3D, visual effects, and computer animation. They host a yearly conference in August of about 25,000 people. They show the best digital graphics and animation of the year, have technical sessions for experts, and courses for everyone else.
Ylem
Ylem is a San Francisco-based group that focuses on artists using science and technology. They have a list of artists with links of their art. They also host events where artist/scientists demonstrate their work.
Critical-Art
They create humorous and provocative biotech art.
Taste-E
They have international links of artists, events, organizations, and e-zines related to the electronic arts.
Art and Science - Lynda Williams
This was the class web site on science and art for a course Lynda Williams taught at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Arts Lab
ArtsLab is a Leonardo/ISAST project supported by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. They have some great links and resources from high profile art activists.
Links from Stephen Wilson
Stephen Wilson is a professor of Art at San Francisco State University. He has compiled a massive list of links related to all aspects of art and technology. This is a great resource.
The Crucible
This Oakland-based organization teaches industrial grade fire arts, such as welding and smelting, has frequent fire-based performances, and has great pyrotechnic/fire/high-voltage theatrical events.
Burningman
An annual event of 40,000 people focusing on radical free expression, art, fire, and technology. It must be the largest art show on earth - showing art that burns, moves, is interactive, and goes on all night. It's an amazing event.
Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems
They hold an annual aerial robotic competition. They also have links and videos on this site.
Symbiotica
Symbiotica is an artistic laboratory in Australia dedicated to the research, learning and critique of life sciences.
Museum of Visionary Artists
Art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself.
Links from Transhumanist Site
Arts and design of the future is what Transhumanist Arts and Culture Showings are all about.
Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Science and Technology
CISST brings together faculty, undergraduate and graduate programs, and research initiatives concerned with understanding science and technology in an interdisciplinary context.
Information Aesthetics
A site dedicated to art from data visualization and visual communication.
Focus Galery
A gallery for those individuals utilizing digital generation and manipulation as an art form.
Interactive Architecture
They find and spotlight brilliant art and experiences (such as a brief lighting competition in London, or the Graffiti Research Lab’s work) based on architecture. They showcase architecture that is art.
Hacked Gadgets
Like they imply, they hack at things for fun and technological improvement. Great stuff.

ISEA
ISEA is a Dutch-based organization consisting of individuals and institutions involved in the creative, theoretical and technological aspects of electronic arts.
Arts Council England
Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts in England, distributing public money from Government and the National Lottery. .
FX Pal
This was formally known as Xerox PARC, a think tank of brilliant people who invented numerous technologies. Fuji bought them.
Fine Art Forum
ASTN is an international organization whose members include national and local media art and technology organizations.
International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences
IADAS was founded in 1998 to help drive the creative, technical, and professional progress of the Internet and evolving forms of interactive media.
iota Center
The iota Center is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and celebration of the art of abstraction in the moving image.
The Creative Capital Channel
New York City-based organization supporting artists in the performing and visual arts, film, and video.
UC Digital Arts Research Network
Interdisciplinary Multicampus Research Group of UC faculty who utilize digital media for cultural and theoretical research and in their creative production.

The Foundation Center
First rate San Francisco organization that helps organizations receive grant money. They have books, seminars, an open library, and your locallibrary may also have direct access to them
Grantmakers in the Arts
GIA is an organization that serves grant makers. They focus on who gives money to who (in the arts) .
National Endowment of the Arts
Site of the (U.S.) National Endowment of the Arts.
Council on Foundations
Provides the opportunity, leadership and tools needed by philanthropic organizations to expand, enhance and sustain their ability to advance the common good.
Daniel Langlois Foundation
He founded Softimage (a major 3D animation program and company) and with his money he created this excellent organization supporting technology and the arts. It's a great looking site, too! Check out the amazing art projects he funded. Yet, funding, for now, has ended.
Artadia
Artadia's mission is to encourage innovative practice and dialogue across the United States by providing visual artists in specific communities.
Turbulence
Great group. Turbulence has commissioned over 110 works ($450K) and exhibited and promoted artists' work through its Artists Studios, Guest Curator, and Spotlight sections.
Creative Capital
They fund artists.
Black Rock Arts Foundation
This organization originated from the people behind Burningman. They fund big art projects, put on events (Fire Arts Expo, etc.) and sponsor projects that are interactive and community-based
Dia Art Foundation
A high level foundation with a very impresssive list of members and supporters.
Non-Profit Legal Guide
This is a small online handbook regarding the law for non-profit volunteers.
Intersection
Intersection for the Arts is San Francisco's oldest alternative art space (1965) and has a long history of presenting new and experimental work in the fields of literature, theater, music, dance and the visual arts, and also in nurturing and supporting the Bay Area's cultural community through service, technical support, and mentorship programs.

New York Foundation for the Arts
The New York Foundation for the Arts' (NYFA) mission is to serve individual artists, promote their freedom to develop and create, and provide the public with opportunities to experience and understand their work. They offer financial assistance and information to artists and organizations that directly serve artists in New York State and throughout the US.

SIGGRAPH
The premier worldwide organization focusing on computer graphics and animation. Has an annual conference in August demonstrating new technologies, and includes courses and a theater of the best computer animation of the year.
Graphite 2007
International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Australasia and Southeast Asia.
Burningman
Burningman is held in the Nevada desert in the last week of August, through Labor Day weekend. It is an annual event of 40,000 people focusing on free expression, art, fire, and technology. An amazing event.
Device_Art 2.0
Croatian-based art event consisting of exhibitions, performances and lectures conceived as an exchange project between artists working at the intersections of art and technologies.
